Update on access to recombinant factor VIII and recombinant factor IX for the treatment of haemophilia in Australia
Thu, Dec 23 2004

Members are aware that the Federal government announced on 30 August 2004 that it would fund its share of the cost of providing recombinant factor products to all people with haemophilia regardless of age and viral status. The Commonwealth government now recognises the risk that known and unknown viruses and agents may be transmitted through blood products and accepted the recommendations of experts that where safer alternatives are available for treatment these should be provided.

Implementation of this new policy was rolled out more quickly in some States/Territories than others, however HFA now believes recombinant clotting factors are now available to all people with haemophilia in each State/Territory in Australia.
Patients are encouraged to discuss this treatment with their doctor if they have not already done so to determine whether recombinant clotting factors are best for their treatment.
