World Haemophilia Day ~ Improve Your Life!

Every year, countries around the world join the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) in celebrating World Haemophilia Day on April 17. The common goal for this day is to increase awareness of haemophilia and reaffirm our commitment to improving care. The theme for 2007 is Improve Your Life!

This year’s theme builds on the WFH’s strategic vision of “Treatment for All.” This vision aspires towards proper diagnosis, management, and care by a multidisciplinary healthcare team for all those with inherited bleeding disorders around the world.

Improve Your Life! focuses on one of the key components of comprehensive care: physical therapy. Regular physical activity and exercise are important for building healthy bones and strengthening muscles, and can help prevent bleeds and joint damage. Physical therapists are important members of the multidisciplinary team needed to care for people with haemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders.

This year’s focus on physical therapy will be especially meaningful in developing countries, where access to treatment products and care can be scarce. In developed countries with greater access to treatment, physical therapy remains an essential part of comprehensive medical care.

World AIDS Day 2006

1 December is recognised internationally as World AIDS Day. World AIDS Day is preceded by AIDS Awareness Week, beginning annually on 24 November. The aim of World AIDS Day and AIDS Awareness Week is to raise consciousness in the community about HIV/AIDS issues, including the need for support and understanding for people living with HIV/AIDS, and the need for the development of education and prevention initiatives.

The theme and sub-theme for the 2006 Australian World AIDS Day campaign is: ‘HIV/AIDS: Let’s talk about it: many faces, different stories’.

The intention of the 2006 Australian World AIDS Day campaign is to increase knowledge about the impact of HIV/AIDS on the Australian population. The key messages are intended to be inclusive of all Australians, not just those most at risk of HIV infection. The objective of this year’s theme and sub-theme is to provide people with an opportunity to talk about the ‘many faces’ and ‘different stories’ of HIV/AIDS, and promote understanding of HIV/AIDS as an issue that affects everyone in the community.
