Changes to rules for blood and plasma donation

Lifeblood have announced changes to sexual activity rules for blood and plasma donations.

From 14 July 2025, Lifeblood will implement the ‘plasma pathway’ approach. This will remove most sexual activity wait times for plasma donations, as long as the donors meet all other eligibility rules.

HFA has consulted Lifeblood and the Australian Haemophilia Centre Directors’ Organisation (AHCDO) about the safety of the plasma pathway approach for people with bleeding disorders.

Lifeblood has confirmed that there will be no change to the HIV risk in plasma-derived treatment products with this approach.
