Have you registered for the Australian Bleeding Disorders Conference? You may not realise, but both HFA and the State/Territory Foundations offer community funding to help people with bleeding disorders (and their support team) to get across to the event. Read on below for info on what’s available and how to access it.

MyABDR is also a hot topic at the moment with the introduction of multi-factor authentication (MFA). If you’re in need of additional support please note the contact details listed in this newsletter.

World Haemophilia Day was a huge day for all of us – reaching thousands of people across Australia and seeing over a hundred locations light up red. Thanks to everyone who helped make this day a success.

Also featured in this newsletter is our new Women and girls Advisory Council, and Cameron Cramey’s article on managing pain with exercise. You can also see our new office address and save the date for the WFH 2026 World Congress.

Do you follow us on social media? Our most popular posts in April centred on World Haemophilia Day. Our social content helped raise awareness, increase understanding, and share the experience of people with bleeding disorders. Check it out here.

As always, thanks for being part of our community.

Australian Bleeding Disorders Conference

Community funding available for Conference

Are you keen to attend the Australian Bleeding Disorders Conference in October, but worried about the expense?

HFA and the state and territory foundations have allocated funding to assist people living with a bleeding disorder, relatives/partners or carers to attend the Conference.

To find out what funding is available and how you can access it, head to our website.

MyABDR

MyABDR and MFA

Some of you have given feedback on the challenges of multifactor authentication (MFA) with MyABDR. The National Blood Authority (NBA) development team have heard you and want you to know they are working on it!

A message from the NBA: ‘The NBA is aware of the concerns raised by MyABDR users regarding the MFA requirements and resolving this issue is a priority. The NBA are actively investigating solutions to streamline this process.’

The NBA MyABDR Support team is available 24/7 to help you sort out any problems.

World Haemophilia Day

World Haemophilia Day

World Haemophilia Day is finished for another year. Thank you so much to all of the community members and landmarks that participated. It was a great opportunity to come together and raise awareness for haemophilia, VWD and other bleeding disorders. We have loved seeing all of the photos.

This year’s theme, ‘Access for all: Women and girls bleed too’ was an opportunity to share information and stories about women and bleeding disorders, highlighting the challenges women face in delayed diagnoses, limited access to treatment, and a lack of understanding about their unique needs.

It was also amazing to see over 100 landmarks across Australia join in by lighting up red. This is a massive, joint undertaking by our state and national foundations, and we’re keen to add more volunteers to the ‘light it red’ team. If this is something you’d like to help us with for 2026, please send us an email (hfaust@haemophilia.org.au).

We’ll include a full feature covering the day (with a photo gallery) in the next issue of National Haemophilia.

Women and girls Advisory Group

Women and girls Advisory Group (WOMAG)

Introducing the Women and Girls Advisory Group!

Recognising the work that needs to be done to represent and support women and girls more effectively, HFA Council has established WOMAG to advise it on the needs and issues of women and girls affected by bleeding disorders and to propose a national strategic response.

We can’t wait to see how this amazing group will help to shape the future for women and girls with bleeding disorders in Australia.

Group exercise

Exercise and movement for persistent pain

Musculoskeletal pain is a persistent companion for many people with a bleeding disorder. Most people are familiar, to varying degrees, of the benefits of movement and exercise as a key management strategy for a range of medical conditions; its role in managing persistent pain is perhaps less understood.

Cameron Cramey shares a summary of his WFH2024 Congress presentation on the role of physiotherapy in the management of persistent pain in National Haemophilia.
